How to Encourage Your Child to Read This Summer

After all your child's hard work this school year, don't let the summer slide set them back. Instead, find fun ways to encourage learning and academic practice during their summer break. The Tutoring Center in Whittier has some tips to help your child enjoy reading this summer.

Visit the Local Library

If your child has a hard time concentrating on their reading material, it may be because they aren't enjoying what they're reading. Instead of assigning your child books and reading tasks, give your child the liberty to pick the books and other reading material that interests them. Head to the local library and allow your child to explore all the options available. Allow them to choose books, magazines, and graphic novels that they want to read.

Join a Summer Reading Program

While you're at the library, be sure to ask if they're running a summer reading program. Most libraries have summer reading programs that encourage children to continue reading and learning through the summer months. Most of these programs give your child reading targets and incentives for when they reach these goals. If your library has a summer reading program, encourage your child to sign up.

Start a Book Club

To get your child more motivated to read, encourage them to start a book club with their friends. Have them choose a book they will all read and a date by when they should finish. They should also hold weekly meetings to discuss the book, their opinions, and their ideas. Sharing their views while also listening to those of others can help encourage your child to get more excited about reading.
