Tips to Help Ease Back to School Stress

If your child is quite stressed about the return of school, use these tips to help them overcome those negative feelings and have a great school year.

Back to School Stress Is Normal

If your child is feeling anxious or stressed about the return of school, let them know that this is normal. While many students may feel excited about the return of school, plenty of students feel nervous, anxious, and even unhappy about this. Students who are attending a new school or are expecting significant changes may have a harder time dealing with the start of the school year. If this sounds like something your child is dealing with, let them know that they're not alone. Help them take it one day at a time.

Make Time to Talk

Don't ignore your child's stress and anxiety, in fact, do the opposite. Make time to sit down and talk with them whenever they need to. By simply venting or talking about what is causing them to feel this way, they may start to feel a bit better. Remember to listen without interrupting and give their concerns proper attention. Avoid brushing things off that you don't think are a big deal, because they are a big deal to your child.

Look for Solutions

Help your child deal with some of their stress by looking for solutions together. For example, if your child is worried that they won't get along with a new teacher, set up a meeting where they can get a proper introduction. Work together to get to solutions that really help your child feel more at ease.
